Nice walk to scenic view point
Big Bend - Santa Elena Canyon - 5/25/2004  [View Log Page]
Rating: N/A Difficulty: 1star Solitude: halfstar
Distance: 1.50 Miles Duration: N/A
Hard to call this a hike but it is scenic and worth the 30 minutes or so to do. Somewhat reminds me of the walk in Zion to the end of the Narrows.
A wondeful short day hike
Big Bend - Lost Mine Trail - 4/20/2004  [View Log Page]
Rating: N/A Difficulty: 2stars Solitude: 2stars
Distance: 4.50 Miles Duration: N/A
This is one of my favorite hikes in the National PArks. The views are spectacular and you don't have to expend a lot of time or energy. I like to do it first thing in the morning right before I depart the park.
short walk to pour off in box canyon
Big Bend - Burro Mesa Pouroff - 4/18/2004  [View Log Page]
Rating: N/A Difficulty: halfstar Solitude: 4point5stars
Distance: 1.00 Mile Duration: N/A
This is a very short walk into a box canyon which gets the pouroff from a large area through a slot above much like the Window. A much more interesting and challenging alternative for the Texas hiker is hiking to the top of Burro Mesa Pour off. This is aa 3.5 to 4 mile round trip through a vally into a narrow canyon for about 3/4 mile which requires some scrambling and boulder hopping. This canyon leads to a confluence with a wide wash which ultimately takes you into an ever narrowing canyon with steep walls that ends with the slot that pours off. Intersting and fun hike.
Nice evening or early morning stroll
Big Bend - Basin Loop - 4/17/2004  [View Log Page]
Rating: N/A Difficulty: 1star Solitude: 2stars
Distance: 1.75 Miles Duration: N/A
Not a destination hike but if you're staying in the Chiso Mountains lodge it's a nice place to take a stroll after dinner. Or if you are a non-hiker it's a way to get a feel for the area without leaving sight of civilization
One of the top hikes in the Narional Park system
Big Bend - South Rim - 4/17/2004  [View Log Page]
Rating: N/A Difficulty: 3point5stars Solitude: 4stars
Distance: 12.50 Miles Duration: N/A
This is one of the premier hikes in the National Park system imo. It's hard enough to keep the crowds away and the views from the rim are spectacular. The hike through Boot Canyon is also very scenic. I like going up via the Laguna Meadows and down the Pinnacles trail. The trails are well maintained and well marked, It's just a terrific way to spend a 1/2 day to day hiking. The elevation gain and loss is more like 2000 feet rather than 4500 as given in the description.
