I hiked the 5 mile BLUE trail at cottonwood lake and hiked down to black creek lake. It did get hot. Not much of the trail used the trees for shade. The hike was 5 in and 5 out. All in all this was a pretty nice hike if you wanted to be alone. I suggest you wait untill fall.

I have only just started hiking. But this was a great hike with great views and diverse geology. I hiked the 7 mile loop highlighted in the hiking texas book.

I would suggest using the two car method and park at the two trailheads . One is in the state park and the other is in Jacksboro along the lake. The trail is very easy hike and gets very scenic in spots along the two lakes. This trail would be great for a causal bike ride. It is marked along the trail with bike signs describing slopes and turns. If you start the hike at the park the hike quickly takes you out of the city. There is one stretch along the airport for about mile that is pretty boring, but the overall hike is very scenic.
