Very much worth the drive and effort

Lost Peak was a fantastic hike, and very quiet. The wind and sun were very nice, and the Mescalero campsite was quite agreeable. Mind the cold at the elevations, though. We slept in a thick cloud cover that night, and it was almost like being rained on all night. The views are fantastic. The ranger was very helpful and kind. I would gladly do this hike again.
Quiet, varied, nice views

I have hiked this trail in 1997 and again in November of 2003. Both hikes had me a bit disoriented, but I found my way eventually after much searching. The signs warning of lack of markings at the windmill are not stretching the truth. It is rather difficult to navigate beyond that point without getting off track. I imagine a GPS might help. I enjoyed the hikes all the same, and there is indeed a bathroom and shower at the ranger station. There is also a very friendly roadrunner that I met while I was there in 2003.
